The photos below were donated to the site by Geoff Stott, Geoff was a member of the Stockport Mod Sqaud in the 1970s and some of the photos have featured in Scootering magazine and more recently on the L.C.G.B forum, I would like to thank Geoff for supporting the Time Marches On site from the very begining and was delighted when he offered me the chance to use his photos from 30 years ago, although myself and Geoff have never met in person we have certainly been at the same events as i have taken pictures of his Scooters numerous times, and featured them on this site, so there you have it , now on with the 70s,
The following is Geoffs story of the Southend Rally, The things i can remember about the Southend rally are that we left Stockport about 7pm on the Friday night, rode for about 30 miles to Matlock and went into a pub till closing time, set off again, we had a couple of Vespa 50cc Scoots with us so it was a slow ride, we ended up in Bedford in the early hours and slept by the side of the river that runs through the town, about 6am this bloke on a red Lammy stopped for a chat, he was a copper that had just finished nights, we set off again and arrived in Southend about lunchtime,
on the Saturday teatime one of our lads went round the campsite asking everyone if they fancied a mass ride into town, next thing there was a few hundred Scooters going down the prom causing gridlock and the police turned up and made us all go back as at the funfair the bikers and teddy boys were all waiting for us,
The Modrapheniacs drove back to Stockport with us and stayed at a lads pub for the night, and i showed them round Manchester the following day before they headed down to stay with the Preston Wildcats Scooter club.
Next up Skegness 1978, We left Stockport after teatime, got to Lincoln and got in a pub again till closing time, got near Skegness in the early hours and found this piece of land, put the tents up and were woken by this farmer type bloke, we'd camped on his private land, during the day it was spent mostly in pubs or being daft as usual.... when someone shouted ....BARKING DOG .... we all went on all fours, barking like dogs or the ...DYING FLY... tiswas was on telly at the time.
The Saturday night we did'nt bother with the tents and found a a little childrens castle thing on the seafront, about 7 of us climbed up and slept in the turret for the night, after the Weekend the police escorted us all out of town as they thought there might have been trouble, probably with the bikers...
Once again Geoff comes up trumps with these fantastic photographs of the Stockport Mod sqaud, the pictures were taken between 1976 and 1979 at the Yorkshire Seaside resorts of Scarborough and Filey with the final pic being taken in Whitby, once again I can only thank Geoff for this insight into the 1970s Scooter Scene.
