The traditional pre season runs to Knaresborough and York were held in the weeks leading up to the Easter Bank Holiday , in theory they were to meet up with other clubs mainly from the Yorkshire area and make arrangements for the Easter rally, in reality they were a good excuse to drink as much as you dared without getting pulled up and some poor soul usually ended up getting thrown in the river,The rally was ressurected a few years back as a ride out and sensibly held on the same day, now why did'nt anyone think about that in the 80s.
I apologise for the lack and quality of the Knaresborough photos but the meeting place is under a tree lined bridge which makes your photos look like they were taken in a coal bunker.
In 1984 Kev Walsh of the LCGB wrote '' Scootering now has its own statement, ''WE CAME, WE SAW, WE DESTROYED.''with that statement, there can be only one event I can be talking about and that is the first run of the year to Morecambe.
For me as a 18 year old scooterboy the weekend holds memories of streets lined with custom scooters the sea of tents on the campsite at Heysham, and somewhere in the region of 8000 people all trying to get into the one allnighter, Thinking back now it was a wonder Kev never turned his back on Scootering, and a relief that he never, as he continued to organise and support Scootering events in the lean years to come.
Spring Bank Holiday and we're on a waterlogged racecourse with the rain beating down, but this does'nt matter because this is Great Yarmouth, the council have layed buses on to ferry us to the pubs the landlords are wating with open arms, the Long bar, Tiffanys and 'TC's serving the Khaki scooter army, I loved Great Yarmouth the best rallies of the Eighties, what do you reckon ??? Answers on a postcard to .......
Newark, The Scootering event of 1984, To be honest It was a really good Rally, I had been really looking forward to this event as the Soul singer Richard ''POPCORN'' Wylie was appearing along with 80s Modsters the Truth fronted by Dennis Greaves from the band 9 Below Zero, The day was spent in Newark itself then back upto the site for the Bands, all was well until Darkness fell and the small campfires turned into bonfires, Some pyromaniacs even had the local woods on fire, anything that would burn seemed to go up in smoke , Rumour was that 6 wooden buildings went up in smoke that night and Scootering suffered another blow in the PR stakes, on the upside though, it was warm in the tents and I've still got Popcorn Wylies autograph, here's a few photos...
The return to Weston, It was a wonder we went back after the running battles and subsequent fines of 83 but we were never that bright so the pickering/ Eastfield SC went back to good old Weston, and as if history was going to repeat itself one of the Eastfield lads got another mention in scootermania, this time for wading into some locals who were picking on some schoolboy mods, not forgetting that's what we were a few years earlier, anyhow to cut a long story short instead of getting a public bravery award he got a truncheon round his lug, even the policeman appologised afterwards, the rest of the weekend was spent drinking cheap Scrumpy Cider and another good rally under our belts. The only downside to the weekend was Sunday morning when we had to rip all the padding out of Noony's helmet to get his swolen ear to fit inside it. and now you know what happened to all the Stadium Achilles helmets or club book specials as they were affectionately known.
GUTTED, ABSOLUTELY GUTTED, Thats what i was when my boss would'nt let me have time off for this rally, the lads all went, and came back with the old best rally ever story, Still GUTTED to this day that I never got there but thats life, not to worry though plenty more to go at, anyhow my old Pickering S.C mate LES BOWES has donated his photos of the rally so view and enjoy , while I go and sulk....
GUTTED......
Still gutted about Dunbar here's a few snaps from Colwyn Bay while I scan Skegness.....
This years run to Skegness would be the last for a few years , It was very hard to get a pint and most people drifted towards the allnighter which was situated next to the carpark come campsite and small boating lake, trouble was the next morning the boats had turned into a bonfire and Skegness council were,nt the forgiving type as the scooterscene found out on it;s return to the town in 1990.
