They say that your whole life has something to do with your family's genes, I am not an academic person and i certainly never remember my dad wearing Levis 501's, but the theory may be true as before i was born my dad and his brother were members of the Scarborough and District Lambretta Club, now if that is'nt a good start in life what is, ??
There's a picture of my Dad below , no not the one with the Basset Hound Ears crash helmet,my dad is the one in the white shirt TVN 387 showing them all where to go on the map, the picture is out of the Scarborough paper and the photos were taken on the Mere, which also hosted a Scooter Rally in the late 80s, allthough that one is best forgotten....
Here's a few more pics from the Scarborough Lambretta Club, the first one is taken at Thornton Le Dale, a village just outside Scarborough, and the second one of the TV175 is taken up Highfield in Scarborough, so if that garage is still there have a look inside, you never know.....
And that my friends, is all i ever knew about Scooters till my teens, I do'nt remember anyone mentioning them and the only one i ever remember was a 125 Starstream which the other lads called a puff truck, and it did'nt even look like a truck, then in the late 70s a new film came out called Quadrophenia, personally i was buying Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple LP'S at the time but a trip to Scarborough in 1980 would soon change all that....
I think you could of gone to Scarborough on any weekend in the early 80s and you would of seen packs of Scooters either the local lads or visiting clubs just coming for a weekend out, i was hooked, trouble was my knowledge of Scooters was nil, and this is true, i thought that the Vespa's were the ones with the flyscreens on and Lambrettas were built by Incognito, so it back to my Dad for a history and Scooter identification lesson, as usual he was glad to get involved but suprisingly instead of looking at Lambrettas he came home with the Vespa roadtest magazine, maybe he had heard the horror stories of the new Indian Lambrettas as well, guess i will never know....
Since i started this site a few people have remarked on embarrassing photo's, well heres one to top them all, thats me, my earliest pic sat on a Scooter trying in vain to look like Quadrophenias Dave and Paul Weller all rolled up in teenage puppy fat, now you've seen it let's move on....
Another invaluable part of the story must go to Martin Dixon the editor of the Northern Mod Scene and later Scootermania, his magazine which i bought religously from Studio One in Scarborough and to me was outstanding with it's Scooter pictures,
ok they probably were'nt that professional, and write ups of Rallies to towns i'd never heard of, all this meant misery for me as i still was'nt old enough to ride one of these fantastic Scooter things.
Everyone i knew wanted the latest tuned up Metalflake 'S' type or coachlined Dyrospeed, me i wanted a Modjob like the one below,
TO BE CONTINUED
I would definately say my dream Scooter would of been this P200E, I originally saw it in a newspaper article when it was owned by a guy in York, but it will always be associated with it's second owner Glynis, who bought the Scooter barely run in and made it one of the best known Scooters of the 80s
In fact, looking back i would say that the Vespas which were coming out of Lens of Shipley at the time were second to none, and probably why i yearned for one of these Modern machines instead of a Lambretta,
