1998 and my loyal GP200 get's a revamp, the Scooter was totally inspired by the first Jet Set magazine I ever bought in 1981, on it's cover was a GP from the Dorset Modrapheniacs with chrome panels and mudgaurd and tons of accessories, couple this image with an excellent article and photos which appeared in a Scooter magazine in the 80's by Robin''YOB'' Williams of the 1970s Modrapheniacs and their Mod styled Lambrettas, So the rebuild was to be simple, bubble flyscreen, chrome panels etc, trouble was this stuff was unavailable at the time and even the mate who sprayed it Porsche red in the record time of 3 days let me down as it was supposed to be Bronze and Yellow, thinking about it I should really build my dream Scooter now as all the stuff has been remade nowadays, I have never met ''YOB'' Williams but if he's reading this then thanks mate that article was inspirational, oh and I still own my first ever Jet Set magazine
The pictures below were taken at a meet at the Bonding Warehouse in York, the venue hosted quite a few Scooter events but it's location at the side of the River Ouse made it prone to flooding, and I presume was the reason it finally closed it's doors.
Scarborough 1998, the Easter bank holiday and as in Easter 2008 the weather was terrible, the mirrors on my newly built Mod job actually got blown backwards as I headed to Scarborough in a force 10 headwind, much to my wifes amusement as she hated the new look Scooter prefering the GP's previous clean sporty look, Sunday was no better as a snow storm hit the seafront and the custom show had to be held in town, good old British weather eh, the last photos were taken later in the year when the Untouchables visited the town for their annual Rally, not strictly a Scooter event but certainly worth checking out if you like the whole 60s scene
Whilst on the subject of Scarborough, at some point in 1998 a guy put an advert in Scootering Magazine for a Sunday meet, being a nosy sod I rode through to see what was happening, trouble was the guy who advertised it did'nt turn up and of the 6 people who did 3 of them were from the old Eastfield club who I'd known for years, they had also come along for a nosy, so we all cleared off to Filey for an ice cream and a couple of photos, The positive outcome of the day was Steve Manning reforming the Eastfield club and in later years running the highly succesful Carry on Kemping Scooter events.
If there is one Rally I always try to attend, it is the Darlington S.C Cumby Arms event, in 2008 I could'nt make it which was a double shame as I had hoped to show pics from the 1998 and 2008 events at the same time, such is life so heres Darlo 98.
Bit of a change of scenery for these pics, they were taken whilst filming Yorkshire Televisions ''long past it's sell by date'' Sunday nights drama Heartbeat, should'nt complain really as we were very well paid for getting arrested by Policeman Alf Ventress and had a good day out with the lads from York S.C only downside was some of the Scoots getting damaged in transit, still they coughed up for the damage as well so we still love Yorkshire TV.
