1986 Rallies page 4
The 1986 Rally to the Isle of Wight was an ongoing argument as a lot of people were talking about boycotting the official site as it was been run along the lines of a music festival instead of a Scooter Rally, Personally I did,nt take much notice as me and the lads were going anyhow and just thought we would play it by ear.
Not a big turnout for this one as we only took 2 Scooters both 2 up on the long trek south once again, on arrival it was pillions over the campsite fence and try and avoid the wrist band checking gate staff.
Do'nt know what it was about this Rally, we certainly had a good dinnertime session in Ryde but the campsite just did'nt seem to have the buzz of other rallies, with a feeling that it could kick off at any time, by Sunday morning we decided to   cut the weekend short and clear off back home,on the long road home both scooters encountered rear wheel punctures and we had to use both spares, then just past York within 20 miles of home it had to happen the other Scooter had another puncture, nothing else for it but for me and my pillion to ride home take my front wheel off and return in a car to get the stricken Scooter back on the road, just what you want after a 300 mile journey.
Next morning Headline News MODS RIOT ON SCOOTER ISLAND, I could'nt believe the headline, ok anybody who was there could see there was going to trouble, but to blame the poor old Mod's for it was a real slap in the face for anyone into the Mod Scene, believe me unlike the I.O.W Rallies of today you would of had to look hard to find any Mods on the National Scooter Runs by the end of 1986.
I wont go into the story of the trouble as I had already left the Island but always felt sorry for a lot of the Scooter Dealers and trade stalls who had supported the Scene only to get their stalls looted, anyhow rant over back to some dodgy photos taken on a 110 camera, do'nt worry stick with the site we go into 35mm film in 1987.
The last national in 86 for me was 12 miles down the road in Scarborough, always a good laugh, the only downside being coming out of the pubs on Saturday afternoon with mates from all over the country all talking trash and acting flash, and all the time your worrying that you will bump into your mum doing her saturday afternoon shopping in town,
As usual a good session the entertainment this year taking place in the underground carpark on the seafront, the downside this year was waking up on Sunday morning and noticing that someone had put a hammer straight through the headset of my mates custom GP200, they obviously did'nt like the Sex Pistols. unfortunately this was'nt unheard of in the 80s if you flick back to the 1981/2 pages there is a P200E called Surf City which had it's seat slashed and paintstripper poured over it the night before the photo was taken, Afraid the photos are a bit dark must of taken them before the evening session.
