1986 RALLIES page 2
Spring Bank Holiday, and finally the sun is shining as my trusty Vespa 200 heads South to Marvelous Margate, highlight of the trip down was bumping into two lads from York on a Vespa, the pillion was limping quite badly and told us that a car driver had tried to stop them going down the side of a traffic jam and opened his door to slow them down, only for the lad on the front to decide to do a Kamakazi run at the door and try and rip it off, top lads or what, mind you he probably still limps today.
We had all booked into a B&B which was unusual as we always camped, on arriving the old battleaxe gave us a verbal about Mod hooligans, the 60s etc and gave us our deposit back, not a brilliant start but we soon found another B&B and had a brilliant weekend, unfortunately the event was once again marred by trouble as the bands appeared at the Scooterists do on the night time, a mirror image of Yarmouth and the lead up to the Isle of Wight, all in all top rally good laugh, now you can look at the photos...
Girvan in Scotland, and I decide to go two up on a the first Lambretta I ever owned, this was the start of a twenty year love hate relationship with the Lambretta motorscooter, I still ask myself why do I bother, all I had to do was look at some of the scooter names of those times, ''TIME TROUBLE AND MONEY'' NOTHING BUT HEARTACHES'' SLEEPLESS NIGHTS'' ok some were taken from Northern Soul titles but you get the idea.
Anyhow back to the story, big turnout of Scoots from Pickering probably because the pubs stayed open all day unlike England at the time, The badly re built Lambretta struggled as far as Dumfries before giving up the ghost, so we merely abandoned the poor old scoot and jumped on the back of two other Scoots my new lift being a cut down Jet 200 [very comfy] had a blinding weekend on the ale in Scotland then head back down to Dumfries on Sunday morning to see if my Scooter was still there, unfortunately it was and we headed for home in the comfort of an R.A.C van along with Eddie of Borderline Allstars S.C who's Scooter had also given up the ghost, mind you   believe it or not even the van driver got lost and we nearly ended up in Blackpool,   Great times and I would'nt of swapped those days for the world.
Anyone from Portcawl look away now, Set off from Pickering in heavy rain which stuck with us all the way to South Wales, one of the lads did'nt have a visor on his helmet so we kept swapping helmets just to add to our misery, still remember seeing 2 lads on a Lambretta enroute it had I travel alone on the panels wonder if there still out there?
On arrival in Porthcawl we were greeted by a police roadblock were a cheery Bobby asked us if it had rained all the way on saying yes his reply was GOOD, he then went on to tell us about a waterlogged site which we were,nt going to be allowed off, I read later that Jeff Smith got a soliciter to let us enter the town, personally we just hopped over the 2 foot fence and went to the pub, cant say I enjoyed this Rally and certainly never went back there, not to worry though were off to the LCGB Blackpool next and that was a top laugh.
